Founded to honor the impactful legacy of Derek Dwight Dandridge, a visionary who painted stories of our streets, this grant fuels the fire of local creatives who aspire to make their mark on the world.
Whether you’re a photographer capturing raw, unfiltered moments, a videographer documenting real stories, or an artist painting the future of Detroit, this grant is designed to help bring your vision to life. Each year, two outstanding creatives are selected based on talent, vision, and commitment to community impact.
Honoring Derek Dwight Dandridge
Derek Dwight Dandridge, also known as Specs, was more than a photographer — he was a storyteller, community advocate, and a beloved son of Detroit His work captured everyday life and illuminated voices that often went unheard. His work transcended the lens, capturing the essence of everyday life and illuminating the unseen stories of our city.
Derek’s legacy is a tapestry of vibrant narratives that continue to inspire a new generation of creatives. Through the 3D Business Grant, Detroit Does Care honors Derek’s passion, vision, and lasting impact by empowering the next generation of creatives

How to Apply
To be a part of this legacy of creativity and community impact, here’s what you need to bring to the table:

Creative Discipline: You're deeply involved in photography, videography, or another creative field.

Detroit Residency: Your heart and home are in Detroit or its surrounding areas.

Portfolio Submission: Show us what you’ve got! Your portfolio should scream creativity and skill.

Community Impact Proposal:Tell us how your work will light up Detroit. What’s your vision for making a difference?

Mentorship Agreement: Ready to give back? As part of this grant, you’ll either mentor or be mentored, fostering growth within our creative community.
